The Thing is a bulky, multi-appendage creature bait hand-poured in Texas by WM Bayou. Maximum water displacement triggers reaction strikes from big bass in heavy cover — flip it, pitch it, or punch it where trophy largemouth hide. Designed to float. $6.99.
How do you rig The Thing?
Texas rig (3/8–3/4 oz tungsten for flipping and pitching), punch rig (1+ oz pegged weight to drive through matted vegetation), jig trailer (adds bulk and appendage action behind a flipping jig), or Carolina rig (1/2–3/4 oz for dragging structure). Hook: 4/0–5/0 EWG wide-gap. Fish it on 50–65 lb braid and a 7'3"–7'6" heavy rod — you're fishing for big bites in thick cover and need the gear to get them out.
What makes it different from other creature baits?
The appendages. They create maximum water displacement and vibration — bass in heavy cover feel it coming before they see it. The high-bulk profile mimics a bluegill or large crawfish, exactly what trophy bass hunt in thick cover.
When is The Thing most effective?
Heavy vegetation, dock pilings, laydown timber, and offshore rock piles — most productive during spawn and pre-spawn when big bass are shallow and aggressive. This isn't a numbers bait; when you get bit, it's usually a good one.
What colors does it come in?
Night Sky, Mr. Natural, Black and Blue, Watermelon Red, Green Pumpkin, June Bug, Oil Slick, Old Earl, Tilapia Magic, Honey, Bayou Ember. $6.99. Dark colors (Black and Blue, June Bug) for stained water or low light; Green Pumpkin for clearer conditions.
